Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees -289
Despite the extreme struggles of the New York Yankees, Cole is still the best pitcher in the American League.
The Yankees came into Tuesday, August 15th action with just over a 5% chance of making it to the postseason, with three straight losses. Much of that has to do with the bullpen and the bats not coming through. It’s been a lost season in New York. Cole, though, has been outstanding.
The 32-year-old is third in all of Major League Baseball with a 2.76 earned run average and is 10-3 on the season. Cole has struck out 166 batters and walked just 42 on the season. His 18 quality starts are at the top of the game, with a 72% QS rate, tied with Logan Webb of the Giants.
Kevin Gausman, Toronto Blue Jays +390
Gausman leads all of the American League in strikeouts with 183 on the season. That is ahead of Pablo Lopez of Minnesota by three. The righthander has made 23 starts, and 16 of them have been quality starts.
The 32-year-old is 9-6 on the season, with a 3.66 earned run average. The Toronto Blue Jays are a team that is going to be dangerous when the postseason rolls around.
As of Tuesday - the Blue Jays had a 68.7% chance of making the postseason. They will use Gausman in one of their best-of-three games out of the wildcard round.
Framber Valdez, Houston Astros +1100
Valdez is the latest pitcher in Major League Baseball to throw a no-hitter. But, after that, he was not super sharp. He has been a little more up and down than Houston would like to have seen him.
Valdez is 9-8 on the season with a 3.31 earned run average. The lefthander from the Dominican Republic has struck out 148 batters on the season, which equates to an 8.9 K/9 rate this season.
The Houston Astros are the defending World Series Champion, but it looks like they could have to start the postseason on the road. The Astros are trailing Texas by 3.5 games, and also behind Tampa, so they currently sit as the 5th seed in the American League.
Luis Castillo, Seattle Mariners +1250
The Seattle Mariners righthander is 8-7 on the season, with a low 3.14 earned run average. The 30-year-old has been around for several seasons already and continues to put up solid numbers.
One hundred sixty-three strikeouts for Castillo puts him inside the Top 10 for Major League Baseball and just in the Top 5 for the American League. Castillo and his Mariners have some big games down the stretch.
The Mariners, as of Tuesday, are in the fourth spot in the American League Wildcard race. They are chasing Toronto, who is third, and Houston, who comes in second.
Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Angels +3500
While Ohtani is not going to win this award, it’s fun to discuss him in the Top 5 for voting.
That’s unbelievable, especially as he is going to win the Most Valuable Player award in the American League for his bat. Ohtani has made 22 starts and recorded 12 quality starts. Ohtani has a 3.17 earned run average on the season and has recorded 165 strikeouts in just over 130 innings.
His 11.4 K/9 rate is in the Top 5 of all of Major League Baseball. His free agency is going to be the biggest news story in all of sports until the day he signs a contract for the 2024 season and beyond.
Others in Consideration
- George Kirby, Seattle Mariners +5000
- Nathan Eovaldi, Texas Rangers +5200
- Sonny Gray, Minnesota Twins +8000
Those are some of the favorites to win the American League Cy Young Award. If you are looking to bet on this, get it in now before any of the odds change.
As you can see, Cole is obviously a big favorite, but Gausman, Valdez, or even Castillo could still make a late charge, or will one of the other guys charge forward and swoop it up over the last few weeks?
Enjoy the rest of the Major League Baseball regular season and good luck!
